Film & Stage
On Screen & On Stage
Caroline's work has been adapted for both film and the stage — from a Raindance award-winning feature film to a sold-out musical premiere at Unity Theatre, Liverpool.
The Drowning of
Arthur Braxton
In 2015, Caroline's cult modern fairy tale became the talk of Twitter when a Kickstarter campaign was launched to turn it into a film. HarperCollins reissued the novel with new artwork and an introduction from Luke Cutforth, the film's director.
It started with an email. In the summer of 2014, Josh Winslade asked if Caroline wanted an 'efficient, completely self-reliant production company' to turn the novel into 'something truly beautiful'. His business partner was LukeIsNotSexy — YouTube star Luke Cutforth.
When they met, Luke arrived with a brown paper bag containing a slice of carrot cake. Caroline liked him instantly. Over the next hour, he spoke about the Greek myths, the characters as if they were already his friends — and his profound understanding of Laurel's heartbreak.
The Kickstarter launched on July 31, 2015 with a target of £75k. It raised £30k in two hours. £85k was raised with ease over the remaining month, with further funding acquired thereafter. The film premiered at Raindance Film Festival in November 2021 — where it was awarded Best UK Feature.

The Colour of Light
Musical · Unity Theatre, Liverpool · 2020
A brand-new musical about mothers, daughters, Muses and the passing on of lessons learned. When Iris was born, Ione was determined that her daughter's life would be better, a little easier and a little less painful than her own.
But as Iris hits her teenage years and begins to make her own mistakes, will she listen to the echoes of lives gone before? The Colour of Light offers a musical journey through motherhood — singing out the beauty, the grief and the universal truths of a mother-daughter bond.
Smailes' writing is so emotive and powerful.
Moving and glorious with a fantastic cast.
9/10 — Outstanding.
Engaging, compelling, emotional.
A beautifully simple musical concept by Taft and Smailes.
It will leave you feeling reflective, uplifted and thankful for any mother figure that has graced your life.
